Origins (1940s):
El Corte Inglés began in 1940 when Ramón Areces bought a small tailor shop called El Corte Inglés in Madrid. Initially, it was a modest store offering custom-made clothing. Areces gradually expanded the business, focusing on quality products and excellent customer service.
Expansion (1950s–1970s):
In the 1950s and 1960s, the company evolved into a department store, adding sections for clothing, home goods, appliances, and more. They were pioneers in Spain by offering credit sales, allowing many customers to buy higher-quality products.
National Consolidation (1980s–1990s):
During these decades, El Corte Inglés expanded across Spain, opening large stores in major cities. It became a symbol of modern Spanish shopping, offering a complete shopping experience under one roof.
Today (2000s–2020s):
Today, El Corte Inglés operates not only department stores but also online shops, supermarkets (Supercor), travel agencies, and financial services. It is one of Spain’s most recognized companies and a leading name in European retail.
Fun fact:
The name “El Corte Inglés” comes from the first store Ramón Areces bought, located on Calle Preciados in Madrid. The original owner made “custom cuts” in clothing, which inspired the name.
